Slate Islands, Lake Superior

Description

Some 450 to 800 million years ago a meteorite struck earth here forming the crater that today cradles the archipelago of Slate Islands 13 km (8 miles) offshore from Terrace Bay.   Volcanic rock, not slate, forms the rugged coastline of this paddling heaven that even the Group of Seven visited.
